Your microphone audio never leaves this page
The tuner asks your browser for the microphone, reads the waveform, and works out the pitch in the page itself. Nothing is recorded, nothing is stored and nothing is transmitted — there is no server on the other end of this page to send audio to. When you turn the microphone off, the stream stops.
If you would rather not grant microphone access at all, the tuner is still useful: tap any string above and it plays that string's reference tone, so you can tune by ear.
The oud, tuned properly
Most online tuners stop at guitar, bass and ukulele. This one carries both common oud tunings: the Arabic C F A D G C and the Turkish C♯ F♯ B E A D, plus a reference A for qanun. The low courses sit around 65 Hz, where a lot of pitch detection gives up — this one is tested down to C2.
It is chromatic underneath, so it will name any note you play whatever the instrument. If your instrument is missing and you want it added, say so — adding a tuning is a few minutes' work and it costs nothing to include.
How accurate it is, and how we know
Pitch is found by autocorrelation with parabolic interpolation, which is what gives readings a fraction of a cent apart rather than jumping between whole semitones. Before this page went up, the detector was run against synthetic tones at every open-string frequency from a bass low E to a top E — as pure sines, as harmonic-rich tones closer to a real string, and with noise added. Every reading landed inside one cent of the true frequency, and the low oud C at 65 Hz inside a fifth of a cent.
What that does not tell you is how your room behaves. A phone microphone in a live room, a nearby air conditioner, or a note that has already started to decay will all move the reading. Play one string at a time, reasonably close to the microphone, and let the note settle before you judge it.
The needle turns green within five cents. Five cents is roughly the point where a trained ear stops hearing the difference on a sustained note — tighter than that is chasing the microphone, not the string.
Why the metronome does not drift
Browser timers are not reliable enough to keep time — they slip whenever the page is busy, and the slip accumulates. Each click here is instead scheduled ahead on the audio hardware clock, which is the same clock the sound itself is played on, so the beat stays where it was put. You can leave it running under a take without it wandering.
Tap tempo averages your last few taps inside a two and a half second window, so a stray tap drops out of the calculation on its own.
Free, and not a funnel
You do not need an account, you are not asked for an email, and you do not have to release music through Mazufa — or through anyone — to use this. Tune your instrument and leave.
