How to Get Playlisted on Spotify in 2026

How to pitch your song to Spotify editorial, algorithmic and user playlists the right way — and get real, lasting placements.

Playlists are still one of the fastest ways to find new listeners on Spotify. But the artists who win placements aren't lucky — they follow a process. Here's how to pitch your music to the three kinds of Spotify playlists and give yourself the best possible chance.

The three types of Spotify playlists

Editorial playlists are curated by Spotify's team (think New Music Friday). Algorithmic playlists like Release Radar and Discover Weekly are generated automatically from listener behaviour. User and independent playlists are made by curators and fans. Each needs a different approach.

Step 1 — Pitch editorial playlists (7+ days early)

The single most important thing you can do is submit your song through Spotify for Artists at least 7 days before release. This is the only official way to reach Spotify's editors, and it also boosts your chances of landing in your followers' Release Radar.

When you pitch, fill in every field: genre, mood, instruments, the song's story, and whether it's part of a bigger campaign. Editors read these. A specific, honest pitch ("a mellow late-night R&B track with live guitar, for focus playlists") beats a vague one every time.

Step 2 — Earn algorithmic placements

Release Radar and Discover Weekly reward engagement: saves, playlist adds, repeat listens and shares. In the first week, drive your existing fans to save the track (not just stream it) using your Smart Link. Strong early signals tell the algorithm your song deserves a wider audience.

Step 3 — Reach independent and user playlists

Search Spotify for playlists in your genre, note the curators, and reach out respectfully with a short, personal message and a private link. Focus on smaller, active playlists first — they convert better and are more reachable than mega-lists.

Avoid “pay-for-play” schemes

Never pay for guaranteed playlist placements or streams. Bot-driven playlists violate Spotify's terms and can get your music flagged or removed. Real growth comes from real listeners.

Consistency wins

One release rarely breaks an artist. A steady release schedule, clean metadata and an engaged audience compound over time. Plan your next drop with our free release checklist, and estimate the earnings with the royalty calculator.
